Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated answers that appear at the top of Google results, summarizing an answer and citing sources. They appear on more than half of all queries and reach over a billion users a month, often recommending businesses before a user scrolls to the classic links.

AI Overviews mostly cite pages that already rank in the top ten, so classic SEO feeds them directly. Google also runs a separate AI Mode that draws from a broader pool where freshness and entity authority matter more. The two surfaces reach the same conclusion often but cite the same URLs only about 14% of the time.
